I am always look for new thing to try in the classroom. My goal is to bring new experiences into my classroom. So a few years ago I was on a hunt for a new way to decorate our little preschool pumpkins. I have loved the melted crayon art I had seen going around. So we turned this into a pumpkin art activity.

Set up

To start off I asked each student to bring in pumpkins for preschool a day or two early, so I could prep the pumpkins for crayon melting. Each kids picked 3 colors and we used our old crayons(what preschool teacher doesn’t have load of old crayons laying around) and found 2 of each color. The kids helped peel the paper off and I snapped them in half and hot glued them to the top.

Process

To start this preschool pumpkin project the teacher brought in hair driers and let the kids melt the crayons. Caution always have a teacher close by when a student in using the hair dryer to prevent any accident from occurring.  Tip 1: check how powerful your hair drier are, we have one that would take 10 minutes per pumpkin and the other would get about 3 done in the same time. (Below is the one that worked better)

Results

Not only did these pumpkin art projects turned out so cool, but also they doubled as a pumpkin science activity. All we did was ask the questions ” What is causing the crayons to melt?” By doing this, we were able to talk about how heat melts crayons. The was certainty a successful pumpkin art project and they turned out beautiful.

Lastly, the biggest surprise we had was the amount that the crayons splattered all over the place. Here are some tips I would do if I would every do this again:

Tips

  1. First use a small box, this way the splatter stays in the box and not all over the floor and walls.
  2. If you do end up with a mess like this here are some clean up tips.
    1. First a steam mop works wonders on the floor. Second get the hair dryer back out and melt the wax on the wall then wipe with a wet cloth. Lastly, a magic eraser helps get any color off the wall that might still be there.
